DIY: Coasters and Home Decor

Hey, y'all! I've got some fun DIY projects to share with you today. Since most of us have been spending lots of time at home during this Covid-19 pandemic, here are some fun little projects to help keep you busy and spruce up your home! These projects are fairly inexpensive to create and easy to personalize. We will be making coasters and decorations that you can either set out or hang on the wall. Both projects require the same basic supplies and follow very similar procedures to create.

Supplies for Coasters:

  • 4-   4x4  square tiles ( I got mine at Home Depot for $0.16 a tile.)
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brushes
  • Polyurethane (which can also be found at Home Depot)
  • Images to place on top of the tiles
  • Cork

Supplies for Home Decor:
  • Piece of wood
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam Brushes
  • Image to place on top of the wood

I love the idea of making coasters because they can be such a fun item to personalize to show your sense of style. Coasters are great to have on hand, especially while having guests. They also make a thoughtful gift, whether for a housewarming party, birthday, or a holiday. To begin making your coasters, you must first choose what images you want to display on them. You can use anything from scrap-booking paper, to photos, or old newspapers. I used a website with free printables and adjusted the size of the pictures to fit my 4x4 tiles. I will attach a link to the website in case you would like to use those images, as ell. I adjusted the height and width of my images to be 3.8x3.8 before printing and cutting them out. Next, paint a thin layer of the Mod Podge on your tile and place your image on top of that. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles in your image because you don't want it to dry wrinkled. After waiting approximately forty five minutes to an hour, paint a coat of Mod Podge on top of the image. You'll want to use a fairly generous amount and get the Mod Podge spread about in as few strokes as possible, or you risk smearing the color from the image. Let this coat of Mod Podge dry for 12 hours. Last, we will use the Polyurethane for our final coat to make our coasters safe to hand wash without the risk of ruining them. Let the coat of Polyurethane dry for 24 hours. Now, because the tile is rough on the bottom and I don't want it scratching my counters or tables, I purchase a roll of cork from Rural King. (You can also find cork at Ace Hardware or a craft store.) Cut out a 4x4 piece of the cork and attach it using hot glue. Now you can use the coasters to put drinks on and protect your tables!

The home decor follows a procedure very similar to that of the coasters. For home decor, you can use any size of wood that you want. I found an old piece of scrap wood and cut it to 11x11. you can use just about anything you want for the image just like you did for the coaster. It would even be fun to do a collage of pictures. I chose to use some scrap-booking paper that I had on hand. Next, I cut my images down to size. (They were approximately 10x10 inches.) Follow the same procedure that you did for the coasters: paint a thin layer of Mod Podge on onto the wood and place your image on top of that being sure to smooth out any wrinkles. After letting your home decor dry for forty five minutes to an hour, paint a generous coat of the Mod Podge on top of the image and let it dry. You can do as many coats of the Mod Podge as you like to get the finish you desire. I did not use the polyurethane on this since I did not need to waterproof my image.

Enjoy decoration your home! Be creative and personalize these projects to match your style! Give these projects a try and show me your final out come in the comments!

Magnolia Table - Banana Bread

Hey, Y'all! I am so excited to share a collection of recipes with you that come from my very favorite cookbook: Magnolia Table by Joanna Gaines. Of course, all of her recipes are amazing, and it was difficult to narrow it down to a few favorites. Since I had some older bananas on hand, I thought we would go ahead and make use of those with some delicious banana bread, a classic comfort food. Joanna keeps the recipe simple yet delectable with easy to follow instructions. With a prep time of 15 minutes, the only difficult part is waiting 45-50 minutes for the bread to come out of the oven, however, the results are totally worth it! Ingredients: Nonstick baking spray, for the pan 8 tablespoons (1 stick) salted butter, melted and cooled, plus softened butter for serving 1 cup packed light brown sugar 2 large eggs, beaten 1-1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 4-5 very ripe bananas, mashed 1-3/4 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1...
